Meet Mark, our Insect Farming Technician

March 13, 2023

What do you do at Better Origin?

I am an insect farming technician, with focus on improving the efficacy of our breeding operation in terms of space usage, labour intensity and biological metrics.

How did your background lead you to this role?

I studied Biology and Ecology at university, but have had a long standing interest in insects from a very young age!

What was your initial reaction to what we do?

I was really happy to see insects being used in a commercially viable way as it showed my hobbyist interest could also be a career.

What’s your typical workday like?

Collecting data from trials that I am running, data analysis, planning out projects and preparing for meetings.

What’s one of your favourite things about working at Better Origin?

We have a very diverse team filled with young people. They are all driven towards a common goal!

When you imagine the future of farming, what do you see?

I would hope that it is much more decentralised, taking the miles out of both our produce and our waste. I hope there is more community engagement through use of allotments or common areas where growing of fruit or veg is organised collaboratively. And insects being used to convert waste back into usable feed or food.
