How did your background lead you to Better Origin?
I’ve always been enthusiastic about managing teams and leading people. Better Origin just had an amazing opportunity for me – a place where I could build a team from scratch and start doing something really groundbreaking. Some of the things I’m doing now simply have never been done before commercially.
What are you most proud to be able to work on?
I’m proud to be working on all of it, really. It’s great knowing that your work means something. We’re not just talking about climate change and emissions, but really doing something about it.
I think the work we’re doing now on different types of byproducts and looking at how they can be best implemented into our systems is really fascinating.
What’s your typical work day like?
Almost every day is genuinely different to the last. I rarely find myself doing the same thing day in, day out. The work varies a lot. One day you’ll be in high-level meetings, shaping the future of the business. The next day you can be on the farm, getting hands-on with the larvae.
What have you learned from your coworkers?
The biggest thing I’ve learned from my coworkers is how to find other exceptional people to join us. This has been really critical to our success so far. It’s so motivating knowing on the tough days that every other person working alongside you is putting just as much effort as you are, and is performing to just as high a standard.
What inspires you to come to work every day?
I’d like to say the biggest motivator here is knowing that you’re making a difference, but I think it goes far beyond that. Some days it’s seeing how well the chickens are doing or how much CO2 we have saved, other days it’s knowing how much you’re helping your colleagues perform their best. There’s a lot more than one reason to get out of bed in the morning when you work here.
What would you tell those wanting to get involved in this industry?
There really is no better time than now – the Insects as Food and Feed industry is booming. I can’t imagine a better time to work at a company like ours, and to be able to really watch the business grow.
